All activities
Hiking
On-foot travel with a day pack. Tolerant of moderate mud and a wide temp range. Sensitive to thunderstorms, heat indices above 95°F, and AQ degradation at altitude.
Trail running
Higher effort, higher heart rate — runners are more temp-sensitive than hikers and won't run in thunder. Slippery mud is a fall risk.
Mountain biking
Wet trails get destroyed by tires. MTB-ers honor closures aggressively — a "muddy" rating here matters more than it does for hikers. Not permitted on all trails.
Dog walking
Short-radius trail outings with a dog. Sensitive to paw-burning heat on exposed rock, very sensitive to thunderstorms, and always checks dog-rule compliance.
